Thailand: Krabi Tourism Playing the Sandbox Waiting Game

KRABI, THAILAND – One of Thailand’s most idyllic and naturally blessed resort destinations, Krabi, is quietly waiting in the wings to follow Phuket into the tourism sandbox. As the Thai resort island set’s its sights on the first of July reopening to international travelers, its Andaman neighbor is aiming to plot their own distinct course in a chaotically, frenetic marketplace.
Unlike the Southern Thai resort markets of Phuket, Khao Lak, and Koh Samui which are highly foreign dependent, nearly half of the tourists staying in Krabi in the pre-Covid year of 2019 were domestic. This more balanced, segmented trend according to hospitality consulting group C9 Hotelworks’ newly released Krabi Hotel Market Update was also in evidence last year, where despite the pandemic the province’s gateway airport trafficked over one million passengers.
According to STR’s Area Director of Asia Pacific Jesper Palmqvist, “Krabi capitalized the most of any Thai market during the extended long weekend over Songkran in mid-April, peaking at just over 80% occupancy on Sunday 11th April, well above that of other islands like Koh Samui and Phuket, that also saw an increase over the holidays.  Amidst the gloom and doom of low domestic demand, vaccine conversations, and no international tourism – there is perhaps some solace in the fact that pent-up demand is alive and kicking for pandemic weary travelers looking for open spaces.”

Echoing the sentiment of many Krabi hotel owners and tourism operators, C9’s Managing Director Bill Barnett points out “the industry is looking back at 2019 as a gauge of looking towards the future. That year Krabi hosted over four million guests at tourism establishments. Mainland China was the largest single international source market representing 14%, followed by Europe which was highlighted by the UK, Germany, and France.”
With the Sandbox effect expected later this year, will the trend continue or shift? Seasonal trading remains high and the core legacy market of Northern European snowbirds is expected to return in late 2021 and early 2022. No area in Krabi is this more apparent than Koh Lanta where long-stay Scandinavian families even set up winter schools for their children on the island.
Edging back to the future, and a scenario where virtually all of Thailand’s destinations are likely to follow a price-led strategy, David Johnson, CEO of Delivering Asia Communications who consults with Koh Lanta’s luxury icon Pimalai Resort & Spa says “there are few other destinations in Asia that are more suited for post-Covid-19 travel trends, be it bucket listers, adventure sports enthusiasts or those wanting to reconnect with nature after the considerable urban-angst lockdowns of the past year.”

Mövenpick BDMS Wellness Resort Bangkok delivers wholesome cuisine to local residents with new “Healthy Eating” menu

BANGKOK, THAILAND – Mövenpick BDMS Wellness Resort Bangkok, the holistic health-focused urban retreat, is giving local residents the opportunity to enjoy delicious and highly nutritious cuisine in the comfort of their own homes, following the launch of its dedicated “Healthy Eating” menu for delivery or takeaway, which has been created in collaboration with world-renowned medical experts.
Rajiv Ranjan, Executive Chef, and Peerawich Nokthong, Pastry Sous Chef of Mövenpick BDMS Wellness Resort Bangkok, have combined their exceptional culinary talents with the expertise of two medical professionals from BDMS Wellness Clinic, Dr. Sureerat Sritangrattanakul, M.D., a specialist in regenerative medicine, and Praerawee Srisurin, a leading dietician. The result is a collection of 10 delectable dairy- and gluten-free dishes that have been carefully crafted using fresh ingredients and superfoods to maximise their health benefits.
Suitable for anyone with allergies, intolerances or any other dietary restrictions, the menu reveals the exact calorie content and nutritional information of each recipe, with written descriptions and easy-to-identify symbols, so that every diner understands exactly what they are putting into their bodies.

Sweet potato and chicken massamun curry

Diners can select from a choice of tempting Thai favourites, such as stir-fried tofu, chili and hot basil, chicken and almond milk green curry, or sweet potato and chicken massamun curry, all of which are served with steamed riceberry – a wholesome, locally-grown alternative to white rice. International options include vegetable lasagne with tomato & pepper ragout, baked salmon with vegetable spaghetti and herb coulis, and lemongrass & mint chicken breast with steamed broccolini and roasted cherry tomatoes, while pan-Asian specialties include red miso ramen with mushrooms and zucchini noodles, and an Asian-inspired Cobb salad. Naturally, Mövenpick BDMS Wellness Resort Bangkok understands that no meal is complete without dessert, so it has created two guilt-free sweet treats: almond milk panna cotta and soft cacao mousse.

Influenced by comfort food, these mouth-watering menu items would usually be served at Rim Klong Café, the elegant canal-side eatery. Due to the current situation in Bangkok however, all dishes have been made available for takeaway or home delivery, so Bangkokians can enjoy the finest health food at home.

Asian-inspired Cobb salad

Chef Rajiv said: “It gives me great pleasure to reveal our exclusive Healthy Eating menu as a delivery service to the Bangkok community. At times like these, when many people are struggling with higher levels of stress and anxiety, a good diet is more important than ever. Our food plays a pivotal role in our physical and mental wellbeing; simply eating the right things can help us maintain the natural balance of our body. I would like to thank our colleagues at BDMS Wellness Clinic for their expert input and I look forward to showcasing our comforting cuisine to local residents.”
Dr. Sureerat Sritangrattanakul, M.D. commented: “Many people these days have developed more food allergies, especially for dairy products and gluten. While they need to avoid this in their diet, there’s the feeling that there aren’t really a lot of attractive choices available on the market. There are even fewer products that inspire confidence in their quality, are delicious and well presented. These factors provided the inspiration to collaborate with the hotel and deliver a collection of dishes that would solve this pain point.”
Praerawee Srisurin added: “I collaborated closely with the chefs to select the proper natural ingredients that have the necessary benefits and nutrients. We inspected the ingredients to ensure no dairy or gluten content, as well as calculating the calories and nutritional value. By combining our strengths, we believe we have created a truly unique menu that tastes great and makes you feel fantastic.”
To order from Mövenpick BDMS Wellness Resort Bangkok’s Healthy Eating menu, please use the official food delivery site or call 02-666-3333. Prices start from THB 220+, with free delivery within 3km of the hotel. For further distances, additional delivery fees apply.

Thailand: S Hotels & Resorts Books THB 182 million From Divestment of UK hotels, in line with Portfolio Enhancement Strategy

S Hotels & Resorts Chief Executive Officer, Dirk De Cuyper

BANGKOK, THAILAND – S Hotels and Resorts Public Company Limited (SET: SHR), the flagship hospitality arm of Singha Estate PCL (SET: S), has disclosed its intention to divest a selection of its underperforming hotel assets in the United Kingdom, as part of its strategy to optimise its UK portfolio and maximise returns.
The company announced today that it intends to enter into a sale agreement for the 73-key Mercure Newbury Elcot Park. S Hotels & Resorts in the amount of GBP 4.25 million (equivalent to THB 182 million). In addition, the company is also considering to dispose up to five other UK hotels in the portfolio which have been identified as non-core assets. Proceed from sales will be used to reinvest in the renovation of core hotel assets in the portfolio to lift up the product and potentially enhance their profitability.
Mr. Dirk De Cuyper, Chief Executive Officer of S Hotels & Resorts, revealed that the transaction forms part of the company’s portfolio enhancement strategy comprises three elements:

  1. Asset enhancement: the company is evaluating to put capex to renovate core hotel assets – the asset that provides consistently solid performance and could generate higher EBITDA with proper enhancement program.  These enhancements will boost the hotels’ competitive advantage and extend the profitability of those properties.
  2. Asset disposal: the company intends to dispose of some assets that have limitation on profit generation, but potentially can be sold at market price. The company targets the sale of 4-6 hotels which fall under these criteria and is currently in negotiations for potential buyers. The transactions are expected to be completed in 2021-2022.
  3. Assets optimization: 60% of the portfolio is fallen into this category. We would seek further opportunities to enhance the efficiency of this group to allow the asset to become a core asset e.g. conversion of leasehold to freehold assets.

“Strategically, we believe the optimal number of hotels in this portfolio should be around 20-21 hotels and in the medium to long run we wish to uplift the EBITDA performance of this portfolio back to the peak level of GBP 18 million (THB 720 million equivalent).

“This is a part of our strategic direction to focus on maximising our portfolio returns and creating value for the company and its investors.” Mr. De Cuyper commented.

In February 2021, S Hotels & Resorts invested THB 560 million to purchase additional 50% stakes in 26 of its 29 UK hotels, raising its total ownership of these properties to 100%. This marked a significant commitment to the UK, reflecting the company’s confidence in the future of the country’s hospitality sector. S Hotels & Resorts believes that ongoing international travel restrictions and the UK’s successful vaccination programme will drive domestic tourism demand in 2021, followed by the recovery of inter-regional travel from 2022.

Thailand: S Hotels & Resorts’ SAii Celebrates Homecoming as Two Beachfront Resorts Open in Thailand

BANGKOK, THAILAND – SAii, the fun and free-spirited upper-upscale lifestyle brand from S Hotels and Resorts PCL, Thailand’s homegrown hotel group, has arrived in its spiritual home with the opening of its first two resorts in the “Land of Smiles”: SAii Laguna Phuket and SAii Phi Phi Island Village.
SAii, which derives from the Thai word for “sand”, was first unveiled in 2019 at SAii Lagoon Maldives, the idyllic island resort at CROSSROADS Maldives, Singha Estate’s ground-breaking integrated destination in the Indian Ocean. Now, S Hotels & Resorts is celebrating the launch of its next two SAii resorts, both of which are nestled on the shores of Thailand’s serene southern islands.

SAii Laguna Phuket is a bright waterfront resort that reflects the tropical beauty of the famous Thai island. It has undergone an extensive renovation including the creation of a new events hall, a stunning seafront restaurant, and an enhanced beachfront bar to integrate SAii wellness and culinary brand signatures. An integral part of Laguna Phuket, the world-class integrated resort at Bangtao Bay, overlooking the Andaman Sea, the retreat is perfectly suited to light-hearted couples, families, groups of friends, and one-of-a-kind weddings and events.
SAii Phi Phi Island Village, situated on a soft-sand 800-metre beachfront, has completed a series of improvements to its locally-inspired accommodation and amenities. The open-plan lobby, freeform pool, natural spa and sea-facing restaurants have all been upgraded, and the spectacular Hillside Pool Villas have been refreshed and remodelled, with the addition of a new two-bedroom option – the resort’s top room category. The resort is further dedicated to preserving the environment through its interactive Marine Discovery Centre.
The two new SAii resorts in Thailand will attract “InSAiiders” – the brand’s term for experience-seeking explorers who value personal freedom, authentic encounters, and a sense of discovery. These millennially-minded guests are tech-savvy, but also have a desire to look beyond the screen and engage in new adventures.

With SAii, the guest journey follows a series of intuitive touchpoints, from “Hello”, a warm Thai welcome, to “Hub”, the social heart of the resort where guests can mix their own bedroom amenities in the M.I.Y Aroma Lab, and “Sleep”, the comforting guest room concepts. “Play” reflects each resort’s activities on land and at sea, including sustainable enterprises, “Treat” showcases its culinary offerings, and “Live” helps to deliver exceptional weddings and events, before “SAii For Now” provides a heartfelt goodbye.
To achieve this immersive guest journey, SAii Laguna Phuket and SAii Phi Phi Island Village, both packed with highly Instagram-able views and vistas, have introduced a series of wellness and F&B concepts to the Thai market. Mr Tomyam, which made its debut at SAii Lagoon Maldives, focuses on Thai-inspired dishes with live kitchens and alfresco seating; while Miss Olive Oyl is a vibrant Mediterranean-style seafood grill and bar. Lèn Be Well, which is already delighting Thai guests at Santiburi Koh Samui, promises a personalised approach to wellbeing through five core pillars: Romance, Relax, Culture, Adventure and Family. Through these signatures, each SAii resort also offers a deep connection with its destination and environment.
“S Hotels & Resorts is a proud Thai company with an international outlook. Our charismatic brand, SAii, embraces many of the qualities for which Thailand is famous, such as kindness, humbleness and friendliness, coupled with creativity, style and fun. Having successfully introduced SAii to the international market with SAii Lagoon Maldives, we are delighted to bring this concept back home with the launch of SAii Laguna Phuket and SAii Phi Phi Island Village. These resorts will be integrated deep within their communities and I look forward to introducing them to our InSAiiders,” said Dirk De Cuyper, Chief Executive Officer, S Hotels & Resorts.
The unveiling of Thailand’s first two SAii resorts will kickstart an exciting year of expansion for S Hotels & Resorts, the hospitality arm of Singha Estate PCL, driven by the roll-out of its homegrown brands, including SAii and nābor, an alternative collection of locally-inspired “luxury-midscale” hotels and resorts. The group currently operates a global collection of 39 hotels and resorts on three continents, totalling more than 4,600 keys.

Thailand: Côte offers an escapade to a dreamy lunch break

BANGKOK, THAILAND – Côte by Mauro Colagreco, Capella Bangkok’s fine dining restaurant embodying the coastal cuisines from the French and Italian Riviera, invites you to experience its new Escapade lunch menu. Available exclusively during lunch service every Wednesday to Sunday from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM, the Escapade menu comprises four courses priced at THB 1,500 per person. And at an additional THB 700 for two glasses and THB 1,150 for three glasses of wine, Côte’s sommelier’s selection will elevate the gastronomic experience (subject to 17% VAT and service charge).

The Escapade menu is imagined and executed by Chef Davide Garavaglia, whose culinary artistry is shaped by years of experience working alongside three Michelin-starred Chef Mauro Colagreco.

Your culinary journey commences with complimentary amuse bouches – such as the chef’s innovative shitake macaron with black pudding terrine filling, a playful take on a British speciality with a complex flavour profile of tart green apple and creamy black pudding.

The journey continues with Cold Ratatouille with fresh sardines and basil vinaigrette. A stew of Taggiasca Olives and confit tomatoes, ratatouille has always been enjoyed as a staple side dish to meat- and fish-centered main courses. Abiding to the restaurant’s philosophy, this Provencal classic has now been transformed into a fresh and light starter wherein the ingredients are allowed to shine.

This is followed by Côte’s signature Slow cooked egg with swiss chard and parmesan cream. Known as “the perfect egg”, the star of this dish is bathed in 64°C water for 45 minutes. The slight nuttiness of the parmesan cream plays up the velvety consistency of the yolk and the swiss chard adds a subtle crunch and vegetal aroma. Served with Mauro Colagreco’s signature ginger-infused bread, it’s a divine twist on the classic eggs and soldiers.

For mains, choose between the “Iberico” pork rack, parsnip puree, and chanterelles mushroom or Monkfish, broccoli and yuzu. Dressed with a sauce from pork jus and banana vinaigrette, the pork is deeply flavourful and succulent, while silky parsnip purée and chanterelles add a tantalizing texture to the dish. Pescetarians will relish the equally flavourful monkfish, a mildly sweet deep-sea delicacy dressed with an umami-rich sauce of anchovies and cream.

The cheese trolley always turns heads when it makes an entrance. At an additional THB 300, let Côte’s tableside cheese selection transport you to an authentic fromagerie with everything from mild-flavoured Italian goat cheeses to French Roqueforts.

Cool down with our sorbet-centric dessert options. The Mascarpone, ‘shiso’ sorbet and strawberry comprises refreshing shiso sorbet and strawberry gelé served atop luscious mascarpone and fresh strawberries. Or opt for the White chocolate and pineapple sorbet, a milky, rich concoction punctuated by the vibrant aroma of fresh pineapple.
