For a long time now, Singapore Airlines (SIA) has avoided distributing amenity kits on their Business Class flights, citing high expenses and the inability of a simple amenity kit to differentiate the brand from others. But all that seems about to change, with the launch of SIA’s Discover Your Singapore Airlines, with both the Restaurant A380 and SIA@Home Business Class dining experiences promising, among other things, a pair of Penhaligon’s amenity kits.
Penhaligon’s is probably one of the most renowned heritage fragrance brands to come out of the UK. Here in Singapore, they have stores located at Marina Bay Sands, ION and Raffles City. And if you’ve ever had a whiff of one of their scents, or seen their fancy animal-head perfume bottles (part of the Portraits Fragrance Collection).
In the promo photo released by Singapore airlines, the Penhaligon’s amenity kit comes in a gorgeous emerald green bag, and includes hand lotion, facial mist and lip balm from the Quercus collection. Launched in 1996, the Quercus collection is a unisex fragrance, and has top notes of amalfi lemon, lime, mandarin orange and bergamot, leading into middle notes of jasmine, lily-of-the-valley, and cardamom, with base notes of oakmoss, sandalwood, galbanum, musk and amber.
Is this a temporary feature, or a permanent one? If anything, it seems to suggest that Business Class just got a lot more attractive with these status symbols, possibly the result of customer surveys and research the company has been conducting for the last few years.
While in 2017 SIA was distributing items from The Laundress as part of their 70th anniversary celebrations, these came with a survey with its frequent flyers asking for feedback on how useful these items were, suggesting something more permanent to come. Business Class amenity kits were later introduced in October 2018 on the ultra-long-range-flights as part of a trial till early January 2019, whereupon they once again disappeared without a trace.
Now, with Penhaligon’s onboard and actual, physical, curated amenity kits, it looks like these perks are here to stay once introduced, assuming the reception goes well. Besides SIA@Home, all we need now is for the pandemic to be over, SIA to fully take flight once again, and a great opportunity to take a good holiday, and fly somewhere great on Business Class, to receive one of these and really travel in style.
